Coleslaw and Potato Salad that didn’t come from people you’ve never met in places you’ve never heard of…….
Getting ready for our annual Sorghum Festival on Labor Day this weekend turned out to be a wonderful family friendly opportunity. It wasn’t just family friendly because my daughters and a few of their friends came to help make the food to be served. It seemed more so because we were able to help someone who wasn’t able to find all the help she needed at the last minute to make what needed making for over 1500 people coming on Monday morning.
Every year on Labor Day we celebrate the harvest (hopefully an abundant one) of our Sweet Sorghum (a molasses like syrup used to sweeten). For days before many of our young men gather together to chop the Sorghum and set it out to dry. Then on Labor Day, we invite family, friends, and the larger surrounding community to come and celebrate as we press the sorghum cane through our horse-drawn sorghum press and cook it down into jars of delicious sorghum syrup. The day is filled with abundant selections of food, crafts, demonstrations and, a good ole-fashioned bluegrass music and singing celebration.
All this is to say, that having the chance to work with and serve someone in your family who had a need is something that brings great joy. It’s been said that, “Love is it’s own reward”. We’re excited to share the fruit of our reward with our friends and community in the way of really good potato salad and coleslaw! Hope you can come!
This morning’s breakfast special has turned out to be a whopper! It was French Toast with Roasted Apples. We take two pieces of Artisan Ovens fresh Challah bread and make classic French toast. Then we cover them with apples roasted in cinnamon butter and smother them with vanilla custard and caramel sauce!
We ran out of this special at 9:00 a.m.!!! I don’t if it’s the time of year for the warm ‘appley’ (don’t know if that’s a word) feeling or what, but we went through two loaves of challah bread in just over an hour. I ran up to Homestead Grocery Store to see if they had any spare loaves and to our great disappointment, they were also out. So……rather than pull the special completely, we replaced the challah bread with our fresh Artisan Ovens Whole Wheat bread and voila! It was just as delicious, just slightly less puffy!

Well our date is set and our menu is ready for March’s version of our monthly Farm to Table Dinners. We told many of you that we were tossing around some different ideas for this month’s cuisine theme ranging anywhere from Ethiopian to French or Italian. Well after a near calendar connection with our Ethiopian Chef, we went for the Italian theme! Hopefully we can connect with our friend from Ethiopia in the next month or two.
However, our Italian dinner is going to be one you won’t forget. Someone visiting our Cafe earlier this week commented on how we could connect an Italian dinner with an Irish holiday (it’s on St. Patrick’s day if you haven’t picked up on that yet). He said that Irish is predominantly Catholic and the Holy Roman Church is in Rome and Rome is in Italy, so we can say that we’re sort of celebrating an Italian holiday, albeit indirectly. I’m not so sure the connection fits, but I will say that it’ll be a great way to celebrate St. Patrick’s day. Just take a look at our menu and I think you’ll agree…
